[Grand Plastic Surgery] Frequently asked questions about Rhinoplasty

What is the difference between open and closed rhinoplasty? Which type of rhinoplasty is the right one for me?

The difference between open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty is whether it involves a horizontal incision across the base of the columella. In closed rhinoplasty, all the incisions are made inside the nostril avoiding any visible scar. The obvious advantage of this method is that there is no scarring after the surgery and tend to have less swelling and shorter recovery time. However, the disadvantage of this technique is the limitation of surgical exposure during surgery. Depending on the degree of alteration the patient desire and the case, open rhinoplasty can be more suitable. Although the incision line is initially visible in open rhinoplasty it completely or mostly fades in the following months after the surgery.

What’s the downtime and recovery of rhinoplasty?

Healing and recovery time vary from individual but usually average 1-2 week downtime period can be expected. Most patients experience maximum swelling up to 2-3 days after the surgery and have rapid recovery within 7-14 days. The splint is removed after 1 week after the surgery and the stitches are removed 1-2 weeks after the surgery.

Is rhinoplasty painful?

A lot of people think rhinoplasty as a painful procedure but the pain level as not as serious as most people think. Patients generally tell us there is almost no pain after the surgery and just have discomfort due to the sterile cotton that is inserted in the nostril for few days after the surgery.

Is rhinoplasty permanent?

Rhinoplasty is considered semi-permanent as long as the facial structures are fully developed. The results will not change unless there is an incident that involves a strong impact on the nose just like any normal nose.
